- 2023 Spotlight
Personal Statement
My name is Sumner Kerr and I am a scull/sweep rower for River City Crew. I am a driven, hard-working athlete who is extremely coachable and never gives up. I began rowing in the COVID summer of 2020 and my passion for crew has only grown; I raced in the 2021 and 2022 fall seasons with River City Crew and I am finishing up a very successful spring season with Youth Nationals in Sarasota in the W2x (partner Emily Costa). I am a diverse athlete; I row crew, played Varsity lacrosse at St. Catherine's School in spring 2022 along with club lacrosse, and play tennis and golf. As a sophomore, I took the highest courses offered to me along with double language, and I am a member of Student Council as well as involved with volunteering at St. Mary's Hospital. I am a passionate student in my school community who can bring many skills to any environment, and I love to spend my time outside of sports and school with my family, reading, playing piano, and walking my dogs. I am always looking to improve and adapt, both on the water and in the classroom. This past winter I worked hard with conditioning on the erg to develop my 2k and 6k times. Crew is a physically and mentally challenging sport that pushes me to my limits; I have a great respect for the sport. With this commitment, I am honored to have accepted a spot on the U19 USRowing Selection Team 2023. Dedicating myself to rowing has taught me valuable lessons about working through pain and giving myself up for my teammates in a boat. The social aspect of crew and the people I get to row with are one of my favorite parts of the sport. I enjoy the balance that athletics and rowing brings to my life, and I give 110% to everything I can in order to make an impact in all my activities. Thank you for looking over my profile and I look forward to being in contact!
