I believe what makes me a good candidate for college is my character that gives me the persistence to continually strive for improvement and obtaining any goal I seek whether it is in athletics or academics.
I believe that character of the individual has just as much impact on success as well as talent and hard work. Life will neither go as planned, nor be an easy process. Success in life manifests itself from picking yourself up when the chips are down, maintaining a positive can do attitude when the outcome seems dismal and knowing where and to whom to go to seeking expert advice. I have a history of living by these salient attributes.
For example, when trying out for my middle school basketball team I was intensely disappointed when finding out that I did not make the team. Although I did not agree with this decision, I thought that I could turn this disappointment from a negative to a positive by working harder at becoming a better basketball player. Therefore, I spent more time practicing, taking coaching sessions, seeking advice and weight training. This led me to trying out for the high school basketball team. I did make the freshman team and did not start at the beginning of the season. I remember asking my father why am I not playing? My father said to me “In life, no one is going to give you anything. If you really want something you have to claw your way to get it. If you are already clawing, you have to claw harder”! My father also told me that I should be patient because if you have talent, they can hide you behind a brick wall, but someway your talent will pull you through. Anyway I did try harder and half way thru the season not only did I start for the freshman team, but also for the junior varsity team. Moreover, I was sitting in the varsity games and was getting playing time as a freshman.
Academically, I parallel the same tactics and attitude that I have for athletics. I take honors classes for math and science. I pride myself on making at minimum honors for each semester. For example, if for some reason I don’t receive a grade that is at my level of expectations, I study harder and focus more intently on getting my grade well up into the nineties.
To sum up this personal statement, my character is my driving force along with hard work and dedication as the cornerstone of my life.
