On and off the court, I was always taught effort and attitude were the only things I can control. On the court I deliver both by going for loose balls, boxing out, rebounding, communicating and playing aggressive defense. I bring my energy and communicate during games and like to focus on defense, because that’s what wins games. I also contribute offensively by playing both guard positions and small forward. I’m good at pushing the ball and I see the court very well for easy baskets, as well as breaking down the defense and finding teammates for open shots.
I left my hometown of Sugar Land, Texas after 14 years and moved to South Florida the summer before 9th grade. It was difficult fitting in basketball-wise because I was undersized and didn’t know any coaches or players. In Texas, I had established relationships with many different people who knew my athletic abilities despite my size. I started all over again. Three months after arriving in Florida, I was diagnosed with Type-1 Diabetes, which left me hospitalized for a week. Needless to say, that was a very difficult transition in my life, both academically and athletically, and yet another setback. I believe all the events that took place were for good reason and have made me grow as a person physically and mentally. My body is faced with challenges everyday with my diagnosis, and my mindset, effort and attitude need to be on point to survive.
