Personal Statement

Hi, my name is Dawson Paulsen. I have been a lover of basketball ever since my dad started coaching basketball and started taking me to the gym with him when I was in first grade.  This exposure led me to become quite the gym rat that carries on to this day.  The strong support from my parents and other great adults in my life have been influential in my development not only as a student/athlete but as a person as well.

Through my basketball journey thus far I have learned to never do things half way.  No matter how hard things get or how tough things are you must always persevere.

One of my strongest characteristics is I am extremely coachable.  I take on a leadership role on my team not only on the court but off the court.  My dribbling and scoring abilities are among the best and can shoot the ball with any defender in my face.  I pride myself in shutdown defense and I hustle until the buzzer.

  • DAKOTA'S TOP 250 EXPO: 2021/2022 STANDOUTS 2019/2020: DAWSON PAULSEN 6’3 Rapid City Stevens – 2019 After a great grassroots season with South Dakota Venom, Paulsen looks to have his best years yet. He will have a new face in Dylan Pourier who will be able to help with the scoring load. Paulsen has great communication on defense. I was on the other side of the gym and I was able to hear him call out screens. He also communicated very well off the screens calling out if he was helping off screens, and if you should go over or under the screen. His shot is silky smooth and would be highly dangerous on a pick and pop from the top of the key. BEST DEFENDERS: Dawson Paulsen Rapid City Stevens, 2019. When you are on one side of the gym and can hear a player from the opposite end over the music, people talking and the other game going on then you know he is a very vocal player. That’s what Paulsen brings to the table on both sides of the ball. He helped communicate his teammates through screens and helped off the screen. He helped with going over or under the screen, and on the weakside made sure his teammates knew they had help if they got beat off the dribble. TOP TAKEAWAYS: These kids love to play basketball. The Top 250 Expo was held in Sioux Falls, SD at the Elmen Center at Augustana. To some people that was just a short drive to the expo but for some kids, they drove four-plus hours to be able to play in the expo. Dawson Paulsen and Dylan Pourier drove five hours from Rapid City. As a coach, you want players that love the sport this much on your team. They came from all over to play basketball from 12-5pm for no trophy or anything just because they loved the game of basketball and are hoping that they can extend their playing careers in college. • Played with BBA Force in the 16U Red Division. First game against Crossfire (team from MN) won 54-46. I went 4 for 6 from the three point line and 4 for 5 on free throws. I was high scorer with 26 points. Next game against a Sanford Pentegon team, won 72-50. I score 19 points in the first half, 5 for 8 on three pointers, ending the game with a total of 27 points. The third game against the Dakota Phenom, I took an elbow to the mouth splitting my lip, coach took me out of the game due to the lip bleeding. I only played 8 -10 minutes and had 14 points - lost 67-55. Final game met up again with Crossfire team from MN - I shot a 3 pointer and came down on the defenders foot causing me to pull a muscle. My coach took me out of the game due to this. I played approx. 10 minutes and scored 14 points. The final score 64-54, we lost taking 4th place.
