Hello coaches, my name is Owen Bousman and I am currently a Junior at Templeton High School in California. I started golf when I was 3 years old, playing with my parents and grandparents. At age 7, I started playing PGA Junior league for fun on the weekends. Then, when I turned 9, I played in my first tournament in the US Kids local tour. My dad has always been the reason I wanted to play golf. He wanted golf to be enjoyable for me. He always said to me, “Golf is more fun when you're having fun.” I remember the first time when I realized that fun could also be backed with a competitive drive. During a match in Palm Springs, the larger kids were continually out driving me, even though I stayed in the fairway, I could not compete. I decided that day to add strength training to my scheduled golf training regiment. Now I hit my drives on average 275 and have achieved a 0.8 handicap. The fact that I’ve grown over a foot in the last year may have also had a factor in that.
I am currently captain of the Templeton High School golf team. I always loved golf, but often played alone, as an individual sport. However, joining the Templeton golf team and being voted by my teammates as captain during my Freshman year allowed me to encourage my team mates, while pushing us each to be better. I enjoyed the team experience and learned how to lead our team towards the goal we achieved, proudly bringing home an undefeated record and Ocean League Championship. Individually I went on to win the Division 2 Central Section CIF, with a score of 69 (3 under) at Tulare Golf Course. By the end of high school I would like to be shooting consistently under par. My goal would be to attend a Division 1 or 2 College that has a strong team along with a strong educational program, warm weather year round would be a bonus.
Academics has always been important to me. I received highest honors from middle to current, and was valedictorian in my eighth grade class. My math and science based brain enjoys the analytics, intriguing experiments, and problem solving process of these subjects. I have achieved a 4.3 GPA and am enrolled in the Computer Science Stem certificate program. I am also looking forward to taking ASB leadership class my Junior year. I am part of the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS), the California Scholarship Federation (CSF), and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). One of my most honored awards are the Citizenship awards in middle school, a schoolwide award that was voted on by the teachers, later finding out that I am the only student of theirs to receive this award 3 times.
I have been brought up with the understanding of the traditions and respectful culture associated with golf. People describe me as having a keen sense of humor, which gets me through life. I enjoy hanging out with my coach, just as much as my friends. I understand what it takes to work hard, while still knowing how to keep things fun. I can be focused during a match, and still chat down the fairway with fellow golfers. I look forward to traveling the world to play all the great historical and major golf courses. I have been fortunate enough to play Pinehurst, TPC Sawgrass, TPC Scottsdale, Cypress Points, and others. I also hope to someday get my Pilot's license, like my father. I do have a goal of becoming a PGA Professional, after getting my University Degree… knowing “golf is more fun when you’re having fun.” For now, the goal is “fairways and greens.” Thanks dad for those words of wisdom, as if it's that easy…
