As an infant, I was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition where cerebrospinal and other fluids build up in the brain causing migraines, extravagant maladies, and possibly, mental processing issues. My parents were informed that the possibility of me living or even performing the simplest of functions, like using the bathroom or consuming food, were slim. As a diversion from the chaos and pain, I used a soccer ball. The design of the ball was a globe and had a map of the world, completed with flags of every country. The clashing colors of the flags engraved on the ball in a domino pattern awed me.
I have persevered and defied odds my whole life. Through my day to day life, I showcase and live by the word PRIDE: Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Dedication, Excellence. This is the creed at my school, Fugees Academy. In the face of challenge, I keep trying. I work harder and Smarter. I treat myself, my work, my peers and my teachers with respect. When it comes to Integrity, I am a person of my word. I believe in the value of honesty. I am dedicated, on and off the field, I am committed to helping my teammates achieve success. I always push myself and serve as an example to my community.
As a senior at the Fugees Academy, I am surrounded by these values. Thinking big, working hard, and achieving are part of my daily ethics. Back when I was a freshman in the 9th grade, I understood that there was a big possibility that I wouldn’t make it into the soccer varsity team. However, I thought and dreamed big. I worked and trained daily and through that dedication, I achieved my goal. This year, I will be captaining my team and through hard work, I know we can go undefeated in the regionals once more.
