My name is Myles Purty, and I am in the graduating class of 2024 at the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy (UDJ) in Detroit, Michigan. UDJ is what I am looking for academically and in men’s soccer.
I started my journey playing soccer overseas in Jakarta, Indonesia, at the age of 6. Even at that age, I was playing in the highest level in my age group. When we moved to Bangkok, Thailand, I was still playing soccer and competing at the highest level. Playing overseas in Southeast Asia was an everyday event; it is the number one sport. When we moved to America, I immediately found my Club team (Northville Rush) and have been with Northville Rush for the last 5 years.
My love of soccer began at an early age. It drew out my competitive nature, and I truly enjoy the buildup and excitement of the game. Even at a young age while living and traveling overseas, I saw this as a global sport and enjoyed the diversity of players; the comradery of playing with a team and working together is one of the many things I love about this game.
As a sophomore at the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy, I played with 17 seniors on the Varsity team—junior varsity during the regular season, and as playoff time came around, I was moved up to the varsity team as a starter. I have always been a student athlete. In high school I have maintained a 3.7 GPA, which includes taking honors classes in English and mathematics, and I am a functional Mandarin speaker, which I have been learning for the last 5 years.
My disappointments and challenges have helped drive me to improve my play and work harder. When I did not make my first Rush Select Team and the Olympic Development Program (ODP) Michigan State Team, it made me self-reflect and drove me to improve both on the field and off. As a result, I was selected for the Rush Select Team the last two years, and in 2022, I was also selected to play on the Rush National Team. In the last two years, I was also selected to the ODP State Training Team, and I continue to strive to make the state team. I have been captain of my club team for last three years and was captain both during my freshman and sophomore years of high school; I was also the leading scorer both years. I have attended IMG Academy (Bradenton, FL) soccer camp for the last three years, and for my attendance in 2021 I received the Gatorade player of the week award. I have played for the same club team ever since fifth grade. We have been leading contenders for the state cup every year and have always played in it. In 2018, we qualified for the national league and have played in that for two years.
Feedback from all of my coaches has been that my soccer IQ is high, I am coachable and my discipline on the field is what continues to separate me. This has led to my flexibility to not only play my primary position as an outside-mid/winger, but based on any game situation, I play striker and defense.
My journey has led to my desire to compete at the next level. My academic record, hard work, experience, and leadership skills have prepared me. I am confident that I would be an outstanding addition to any college soccer program. My goal is to continue to succeed in the classroom and excel in the game of soccer.
