Personal Statement
I had never been a top athlete on the teams sports I played as a kid. I grew up trying lots of different sports and I’d run around the field a lot but if our team wanted to score, the team wasn’t looking to me. I was discouraged with participating in organized sports and focused on skiing which I still enjoy.
In swim class at a young age, my instructor always said I had a natural talent, but I never gave it much thought. When I was in 8th grade my mother suggested to me to go out for the swim team. In my first meet I swam in a backstroke event and came in second. The excitement I felt and the confidence it gave me was something I’ve never felt before. From that moment on I was hooked on swimming. I joined a local club team that summer and have been working hard on improving my swimming ever since.
In college I hope to continue my journey with swimming, taking the confidence it gives me to the next level. My goal is to choose a school where I can be a positive supportive member of the swim team both in and out of the pool. Academically I am looking for a school that expands creatively thinking for myself, embraces debate and discussion and will provide me with the tools l need to be successful in the workforce and in life.
I have my family to thank for a great start in life with good values and strong principles. I believe that life is best lived ethically. I will always choose to do what is right over what is popular. If I feel like I’m wavering from that principle I often circle back to one of my favorite quotes from Captain America.
“Doesn't matter what the press says. Doesn't matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn't matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. This nation was founded on one principle above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world — No, you move."
