Personal Statement
Hello! I’m Sam Carlson, a Senior at Davis High School in Utah. Swimming has been an integral part of my life since I was 5 and has helped me understand the value of discipline, practice and hard work. Ultimately, my goal is to swim with a college team that can help me become the best version of myself as an athlete, student, and person of character.
After losing my longtime coach at the end of the pandemic, I made the transition to a new team and coach. I have now been with Coach Thorum for 1 Year. This change has pushed me physically and mentally. I am now a more well rounded swimmer and I'm starting to see the benefits of this change. I proved to myself that hard work and determination through the process of learning a new coaching style is helping me reach the goals that I have.
When the pandemic forced me out of the pool, I was able to pursue other hobbies. These include photography, hiking, and a variety of other outdoor activities that kept my body in shape for the swim season and have continued to be a part of my life now. I also found I love to create and I'm looking for a school where I will be able to pursue that academically.
My various skills—especially my capabilities in the pool—make me a perfect candidate for your college. Not only am I a determined and dedicated swimmer, but I’m a team player who values everybody’s work on the team. The better we are as a team, the better we can be individually!
