I am Sebastian Espinal, and I am relatively new to the sport of track and field. I picked up the shot put last winter for fun more than anything, and started throwing javelin not long after in March. In the short time since I began with both throws, I have made tremendous strides that I am proud of, but are nowhere near how far I plan to go in this sport. I am certain that my marks in the javelin and shot put will far surpass their current level as I commit to track & field as my primary athletic focus this upcoming season.
The progress that I have made has come from my hard-work and effort in the gym and on the track, the same effort that I put into all that I do in life. In the classroom, I have fought hard to maintain my GPA at Regis High School, the #1 Catholic High School in the USA known for its rigorous courses of study. Outside of the classroom, I have remained committed to the people and communities I care about, never losing sight of the things that truly matter most to me. Despite the pressing financial and social struggles my family and I have faced throughout our life, I have remained motivated to give back, understanding that I am where I am in life because of my circumstances, not despite them. As director of a tutoring program for underserved youth, the Vice President of my school's Black Student Union: Heritage Club, and a peer minister and tutor, I have been incredibly fortunate in being able to give back to those around me, and develop myself as a leader.
I am an all around competitor, and if you can expect anything from me, it is that I will contribute in whatever capacity I can to help the team win. I am the fighter who will put his head down and work when he needs to, but also the leader who keeps his head up when the results aren't there and the team is down. I hope to end up in an institution that can offer excellent Academics and Athletics in the same place, and most importantly a place that will challenge me to always be a better person and athlete than I was yesterday.
Thank you.
