Personal Statement
My name is Zach Campbell, currently a junior at Douglas Southall Freeman High School. I am 5'8'', 135 pounds, and a pole vaulter for my varsity track team. Despite my size, I'm able to get on heavy poles and tend to go through new poles really quickly.
Most recently in the outdoor season, I finished 1st in districts, and scoring points in order to help my track team win the district 3 times in a row. June 2012 Update: My current PR is 14' 7" ,which was at Outdoor VHSL Regionals.
I have also won the Outdoor Virginia Central Region competition, and placed 3rd in the VHSL State Meet with a jump of 14' 6" feet. My hard work has paid off, and I am currently entered in The New Balance Nationals Emerging Elite on June 14, 2012, and Junior Olympics at CNU a fews days later.
I've made consecutive honor roll and currently have a GPA of 3.96, have received Douglas Freeman MVP Award this year for both Varsity Indoor and Outdoor seasons, have received The National Leadership Award "I Dare" with distinction
My school preferences include a big, full of school spirit type of campus. I would love to attend a university that is both really into the sport aspect, yet has a fully-fledged academic curriculum to choose from. I'm looking for a college with a good coach that helps me to train, win meets, and jump the best that I can. I'm also looking for a university that has a school of finance or school of business law, because those are two fields that I am interested in pursuing as possible careers.
I'm really interested in staying on the east coast so I can visit my family every now and then as well. Pole Vaulting is something I've picked up quite easily and is something that I enjoy beyond explanation. It's so technical in every little aspect but it's one of those sports that you have to be able to just do without over thinking it. I love the challenge that comes with it, and the feeling that emerges from the half-second of free fall after clearing a new height. Realistically, I'm looking for a college that allows me to perform well as an athlete and as a student.
