Personal Statement
Hi,
My name is Letty Chavez. I am currently a RED SHIRT(COVID) Junior at Monroe College in New Rochelle, NY. Second Base is my primary position, but I have practiced at other infield positions. I am currently living my dream of being a college athlete. I cannot begin to tell you how much the game of softball has given me. I find that everything I do in my life somehow comes back to softball. I am the type of person that believes work ethic defines you. Whether it is on the field, or in the classroom, the amount of work you set forth to something generates the results you are going to achieve. Starting in the fall of 2020 I will have 3 years of eligibility remaining to play. I understand that playing competitive softball does not go on forever, so I want to give everything I have to Monroe, and my future school for the remaining 3 years I have of playing.
I was born in Chicago, IL. I attended high school in near by River Grove, IL at Guerin College Prep. It is there where I learned the game of softball. My parents, coaches, and teachers pushed me to the limit for me to have an opportunity to play in college. As I look back, I cannot thank them enough for believing in me. They have given me the confidence that has helped me throughout my time at Monroe College.
College softball has been extremely intense. I did not realize the competition level when I first started practicing here. Monroe has taught me that there are no favorites, like high school. The best player plays, and you better plan on giving everything you have at every moment in softball, and in school. I did not receive much playing time my first year, but it has motivated me to win the starting second base job. I started the first 3 games for Monroe at second base in 2020, but unfortunately that was as far as the season went in the spring. Before departing from Monroe due to COVID, I spoke personally to my coach, she was heartbroken that the season was cancelled, but I think it was that she knew she would not be able to finish what she started with some of the girls. It was an easy decision for me to come back in the fall and play one more season at Monroe. I want to leave Monroe knowing I did whatever it took for us as a team to win, whether it was supporting my players on the bench, or making plays on the field. I want to be able to look back and say that I gave 100% to this program, and have 0 regrets.
All in all, I can promise you that you would be getting a player that leaves everything on the field, and works very hard in the classroom. I want to be a leader for my younger teammates, some one to lean on when college can be overbearing, and explain to them what it takes to succeed not only in softball, but with college in general. I also want my coaches and teammates to see how hard I work, and the passion I have for the game.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Sincerely,
Letty Chavez
