Playing basketball is thrilling, really; everyone is in constant motion, everyone is making some sort of mishap, and everyone can seize the chance to make up for their mistake. That last concept is what drew me to basketball initially and helped cure my perfectionism. My mindset shifted from "I can't pass, I must suck" to "Bad pass, my bad," and hustling back to defense to aid my teammates.
Now, basketball is basically my only personality trait besides school. Just kidding, maybe.
It feels incredible knowing your team trusts you when you're shooting the ball. It feels euphoric when you're making a pass, and it hits the perfect spot you aimed for. It feels rewarding when a move or shot or combo that you've drilled over and over, before and after practice, gets used during a game or scrimmage.
The game is ever-evolving and has taught me that: being a leader doesn't mean not making mistakes, being a good shooter doesn't mean selfishly shooting every shot, hard work can and will pay off, and confidence in yourself and your abilities sets you up for success. - Different aspects of the game have translated to my life in different ways. Academically, I've had straight A's; basketball taught me that mistakes on tests or assignments are okay, so long as you understand the error and learn from it. From this lesson, my academics have excelled, as I am currently enrolled in multiple AP and honors classes.
In college, I am looking to continue my student-athlete lifestyle. I am striving for some academic challenges - which I think I'll receive plenty of if I continue my interests in science and engineering -. On the court, many coaches have recognized me as coachable, respectable, and a leader. I can adapt to a coach's program and excel in almost any environment, and am passionate about every aspect of the game.
