Personal Statement

Hello my name is Ashlyn Johnson.  I am a Junior at Hillside High School in San Mateo, CA.  I have been playing golf for 6 years.  I am also deaf, I was born that way and today I wear bilateral cochlear implants.  Meaning with my cochlear implants on I can hear almost as well as any other person, but without them on, I cannot hear anything.  I am a very good sleeper, LOL.   I love all sports and played softball and flag football when I was younger.  Now I play basketball and golf.  My dad started taking me and my sisters golfing when we were young and I have grown to love the game.  I would say my strengths are my ball striking, chipping and passion to get better.  I need to improve on course management and managing my passion, sometimes I get a little fired up on the course.  I want to play college golf and one day perhaps play professionally.

I was selected to compete for Team USA in the 2020 Wold Deaf Golf Championships to be held at Forest of Arden, Birmingham, England in August of 2020.  I was the youngest member on the team (12 years old at the time of my selection).  Unfortunately the event was canceled due to COVID-19.  I am slated to compete at the United States  Deaf Golf Championships at Falconhead Golf Club in Austin, Texas in June of 2021.

I did compete in the United States Deaf Gold National Championships in June of 2021 in Austin, Texas.  I shot a 4 day score of 304 with rounds of 78, 77, 75 and 74 at a distance of 5800 yards.  I won 1st place, and set a 4 day USDGC record for total strokes in the women's division. I will now will compete in the 2022 World Deaf Golf Championships in Lihue, HI.  I also am looking to compete in the 2022 Deaflympics in Caxias do Sul, Brazil next May.

I want to compete in as many arenas as I can in my junior golf career to prepare me to play at the highest level I can collegiately.  I am a hard worker and have already overcome much in my life.  I am a fighter and will never give up.  I love God, my family and friends, my puppy and playing golf.

Events

  • Camp/Event
  • San Jose Muni Junior Championship
  • 4/02/24 to 4/03/24
  • I Shot +7 - 75 and 76 over two days to finish 4th out of 11 girls, 3rd in my age group. Par 72 at 5600 yards. I hit the ball well both days in the breezy conditions. Was proud of my last 9, after a disappointing +4 on the front I finished even par on the more difficult back in 15-20 mph winds.
  • Camp/Event
  • US Teen Series
  • 1/27/24 to 1/28/24
  • Par 72 played at a wet and soggy 5600 yards. Finished T8 out of 36 girls with a 77 and 75. I hit the ball well both days. I made 6 birdies over two days and putted well with one double in 36 holes.
  • Camp/Event
  • 2023 CCS Championships
  • 10/31/23 to 10/31/23
  • Shot a +4/76 for 12th place out of a field of 116 competitors. I missed qualifying for NorCals by 2 shots.
  • Camp/Event
  • 2023 PAL Girls Golf Championship
  • 10/24/23 to 10/24/23
  • Shot a +3/74 to win the individual title for the second consecutive year. I hit the ball well today, but got off to a slow start on the front nine at +4. I was able to turn it around on the back with birdies on #10 and #18 to finish 1 under on my second nine. On to sectionals next week.
  • Camp/Event
  • 2023 Hillsdale High School "Junior Season"
  • 8/28/23 to 10/17/23
  • Hillsdale High School "Junior Season". Our team finished with an 8-4 record and a 3rd pace league finish. Medaled in 11 of 12 matches and had a season differential of 1.5 (new school record). Low round was -2 35 at Peninsula Golf and CC (new school record) and shot -1 twice at PGCC during the season as well. We had a really fun season. On to the Individual League Championship Tournament next week.
  • Camp/Event
  • JTNC Fall Series
  • 8/26/23 to 8/27/23
  • Par 72 at 6,190 yards. Played poorly on Saturday on a windy day, shot 83. Came back strong on Sunday to shot a 76 and climb 10 spots on the leaderboard. I was + 10 through 12 holes with my cochlear implants on. I took them off on hole 13 on Saturday and proceeded to shoot +5 over the next 24 holes. I played much better and was able to concentrate in a new way playing totally deaf.
  • Camp/Event
  • United States Deaf Golf Championships
  • 7/10/23 to 7/14/23
  • Played from 5750 yards with a 73.9 rating, in the thick wooded forest in Northern, WI. The course felt like it played much longer due to the narrowest fairways I have ever seen. I could only hit my driver 3-5 times a round, mostly using 3H and 5W or 4I from the tees. I shot, 80, 74, 75 and 80 over 4 rounds and won first place in the Women's Open Division, just as I did in 2021. I am most proud that I only lost 1 ball in the dense forest over the 4 day event with fairways averaging 24-28 yards wide. I will be headed to The Gold Coast of Australia in August of 2024 to represent the US in the 2024 World Deaf Golf Championships.
  • Camp/Event
  • 19TH NCGA WOMEN'S AMATEUR
  • 6/26/23 to 6/28/23
  • Par 71 at 6000 yards and 76.1 rating. I shot 78 - 77 over the first 2 days and missed the cut. Played with a lot of D1 and D2 girls and learned that I can keep up. I made 5 birdies in 2 rounds, but also made 6 doubles. I am working on minimizing the damage when I get into trouble.
  • Camp/Event
  • 73rd CWAC Junior Girls State Championship
  • 6/19/23 to 6/21/23
  • Par 72 from 6400 yards and 77.7 rating. I Shot 82-81 and did not advance to Match Play. I hit a lot of good shots, but I am continuing to work on my course management. It was a great event, I can't wait to play next year.
  • Camp/Event
  • San Francisco City Women's Championship
  • 3/05/23 to 3/26/23
  • Shot 79 in the Qualifying round to finish T22 out of 60 and qualified for the "Inkster Flight". Missed the Championship flight by 1 stoke on a wet and windy day at Harding. Match play begins on 3/18/23
  • Camp/Event
  • PAL Girls Individual Tournamnet
  • 10/25/22 to 10/25/22
  • Shot +5, 76 and won first place by 5 shots at the par 71 played at 5500 yards. Shot 38 and 38, with an unlucky double on #18 when my approach shot hit the pin and ricocheted into the water. I was very pleased with my round, I hit the ball well and became the first player from my high school to claim the Individual League Title.
  • Camp/Event
  • 2022 World Deaf Golf Chmapionships
  • 10/18/22 to 10/21/22
  • Finished 5th out of 31competitors (10 shots back) in the Women's Open Division on the Par 73 74.2/124 Wailua Golf Course played at 5995 yards. I was the youngest member on the American team and the top American finisher. Scores of 82, 79, 74(lowest score of the women's field, with the only eagle from any female on the Par 5 - 479 yard 9th hole) and 82. Hit the ball very well, just made a couple of big numbers through the week. What a great experience, looking forward to Australia in 2024.
  • Camp/Event
  • 2022 Hillsdale High School Girls Golf Season
  • 9/05/22 to 10/14/22
  • **Sophmore Year** - TEAM MVP and ALL LEAGUE HONERS as well as "SOPHMORE OF THE YEAR"- Played #1 for HHS. Best Scores was -1 par 36 at Peninsula Golf and CC on the back 9 on 10/3/22
  • Camp/Event
  • US KIDS WORLD TEEN CHAMPIONSHIP
  • 7/28/22 to 7/30/22
  • Shot 80, 75 and 78 and finished T36 out of 105. I hit the ball well all 3 days, but just needed to make a few more birdie putts. Had a fun time and learned a lot about Bermuda Hybrid greens and reading the grain.
  • Camp/Event
  • 2021 Summer Deaflympics
  • 5/07/22 to 5/11/22
  • Finished 2nd as the Silver Medalist in Women’s golf at the 2021 Deaflympics played in May of 2022. Par 71, 9 hole course that was played from different tees at 5400 yards with a rating of 71.6 for 18 holes. 2 day stoke play total of 153. Rounds of 76 and 77 allowed me to qualify as the #2 seed for the Match Play portion of the competition. I defeated the #7 seed 8 and 6. Then, I defeated the #3 seed 4 and 2. I lost 5 and 4 to Diksha Dagar a 2- time winner on the Ladies European Tour. She was phenomenal and I learned so much playing with her, even if she “cleaned my clock”. It was a joy to play for team USA and bring home a silver medal.
  • Camp/Event
  • CCS Championship/Sectional Playoffs
  • 11/02/21 to 11/02/21
