As Malcolm X states “There is no better than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own speed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance next time.” All the time life throws you curveballs and your character is defined by how you overcome those obstacles. About four years ago my life changed; I went from having perfect vision to being visually impaired for the rest of my life. I now see double vision all day every day, every second of my life. And it did not stop there. Over the course of my high school life my vision slowly deteriorated. I now see a combination of spots, floaters, additional shadows, and additional beams of life. At some times my right eye gives out and I can not see anything. In addition, I have severe body pain and joint issues. I have been to every hospital in Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. No doctor has been able to figure out what is wrong. I am now on the wait list for the Mayo Clinic. But none of my medical issues or any other versatilities have stopped me ever. Surprisingly, I am stronger and more determined. My entire life I have been an advocate for equality, human rights, and a strong voice for the LGBTQ+ community. Identifying as gay and queer has come with challenges but have made me want to fight harder for people that struggle with affliction.
In my life I have a strong passion for golf. I have been on the Woodstock Academy’s Varsity Team for both my freshman and sophomore year. I started playing golf my freshman year. For my freshman year I finished number one for the team and placed 3rd in the ECC tournament, carding a 45. My sophomore year came with more challenges, but I finished second for the team, placed 4th at the ECC tournament, carding a 49. For the first time in the history of my school, our team qualified for the State Tournament. I carded a 100 that day. Playing golf is extremely hard. It took my coach a long time to understand that I can not even see the flag. Whenever I put I do not even know where the actual hole is because of my vision. And not only that the fatigue that comes with playing is intense on my body. But do not misunderstand why I am saying all this. I will continue to practice as much as possible. Unfortunately, this season is canceled due to the pandemic. But I continue to practice and by time summer tournaments, I will improved immensely. I have seen a lot of progress since my sophomore season, and I have high hopes for this year. My goals are to play college golf and whatever career I choose, it is to help improve lives.
