Hello, my name is Erica Gilligan. I am a goalie from Northeast Pennsylvania. I attend Wyoming Area Secondary Center. I have outstanding academics and excel in multiple sports and clubs. My school’s team found itself without a goalie this year and some of my friends who are on the team came and asked if I would step into the crease. I decided to try it and it didn’t take me long to learn the game and fall in love with it. The welcoming atmosphere and team dynamic helped me push myself to be the best I could be. Another goalie came out for the season and we had a friendly competition, and I gave it my all. My hard work paid off and I claimed the position of starting varsity goalie on a team that made it to district finals, two years in a row. Post-season I joined a travel lacrosse team called the NEPA Laxerz. In June we competed in the Girls of Summer Tournament in Tully, NY. My team played three games and won one, tied one, and lost one game. I feel that with more practice, my team and I will do even better next time.
Each one of my coaches and instructors says my work ethic and coachability help me improve my performance every day. My ability to be vocal, as well as see the entire field during a game or practice, assists my teammates in controlling the ball, setting up plays, and achieving more goals.
Along with lacrosse, the other sports I participate in are tennis, basketball, track and field, and Irish step dance. The clubs I participate in are Student Council Executive Board as the Junior Art Director, Science Olympiad where I compete in Fossils and Disease Detectives, Friends of Rachel, and Drama Club. In addition to these activities I also have two jobs. On Saturday mornings, I teach Irish step dance at Emerald Isle Step Dancers and I work as a dishwasher and waitress at B3Q Smokehouse. After my clubs, sports, and jobs, I do my best to answer the call. I volunteer at West Pittston Hose Company as a Junior Firefighter. When I get free time, I not only practice my sports, but I travel with my family and friends to anywhere we can.
In the future, I’d like to attend college and graduate with a degree in Genetics or Cell and Molecular Biology. I hope to be either a geneticist or a genetic counselor. While earning my degree, I would love to pursue a collegiate lacrosse career, make new friends and create a family that I can depend on in lacrosse and in life.
