I would be good addition to a collegiate rowing team because I truly define “student-athlete.” While I may not always have the top erg score in the boathouse, I am known for my relentless work ethic, great teamwork, and positive attitude - while taking a heavier class load than all of my peers.
My family is a military family and moved from Japan to Virginia my freshman year. I had never rowed before and surprised everyone (including myself) by making the TCW Freshman Boat as the 5 seat. That year we won every regular season race we competed in, including first at VASRA State Championships, fourth at the Stotesbury Cup, and sixth at the SRAA Nationals. My sophomore season, I was on the TCW 2V where we won VASRA State Championships again (the first time the TCW 2V had won in eight years). I have just completed my junior TCW season, where I spent most of it again as the 5 seat on the TCW 2V, though our boat raced as the 1V at VASRA State Championships, finishing sixth.
But rowing is not all I do. I’ve earned three varsity letters on the TCW swim team, been selected as a captain, and learned to become both a leader and a teammate. I’m known for putting the team’s success above my own and creating a positive environment for everyone. I have completed six AP classes along with several honors courses. Although T.C. Williams no longer has class ranks, I was 29/985 my sophomore year in a school with over 4,000 diverse students and I have continued to earn high marks in challenging courses. I like to push myself academically, but also really enjoy helping my teammates with schoolwork.
I believe being a military kid has helped me stay calm in stressful situations and face challenges - moving, making new friends, having to leave those friends behind - and this has prepared me and continues to aid me with crew. I know I can be an asset to a collegiate rowing team because I am an adaptable student-athlete who cares about my teammates, loves crew, gets along with all kinds of people, and has a proven ability to compete at the highest levels.
