Hello! My name is Jada Mahoney. I have tried many different sports since I was young, including competitive swimming, lacrosse, volleyball, and more, but I have never had so much love for a sport until I began rowing. Aside from rowing, some of my passions include community service, and specifically helping children in difficult circumstances (such as immigrants and refugees, or children struggling with poverty) with their education. I am not interested in becoming a teacher for my profession, but volunteering with this kind of work is something that I enjoy doing when I can because I believe that education is very important and can enable a person to help themselves out of difficult circumstances.
I am also a big environmentalist and love hiking, backpacking, and doing anything that can get me outdoors so I can connect with nature. This is one of the reasons that I love rowing so much! I love the beautiful views and enjoying nature while on the river compared to an indoor court. Another facet about rowing that I enjoy is the team aspect of it. I know many people say this about the sport that they play but I feel as though crew is drastically different than other sports in this regard. One person can’t “carry the team” like in other sports. If one person has their oar handle a bit too high, or rushes to the catch too fast, it can set off the whole boat. I also like the discipline and leadership skills that it teaches.
Because my team is so small, we do not do much erg or weight training. Once I realized how important it is for me to continue rowing in college, I took it upon myself to do erg and weight training outside of our regular practices. I hope that I can work on these skills even more during college. I am willing to work hard and do whatever it takes to have a successful season as a team.
