2021 SpotlightPersonal Statement
- My name is Izzi Wirtz and I will be a Senior at Lyons Township High School in LaGrange, Illinois. I play for Chicago Inter 2005/06 ECNL, and I'm an outside back. For high school, I play center defensive mid. My club team is the 2021 and 2022 Illinois State Cup champions and undefeated in the ECRL and Elite 64 leagues, Fall 2022. We play for both regional titles this summer. This is my third year on LTHS Varsity and I am a captain. We are one of the top-ranked high schools in Illinois and the nation. We are conference and regional champions in 2022 and 2023, and sectional finalists both years. In 2021, my freshman year, we were second in the Illinois IHSA 3A division in 2021, giving up only four goals all year. As a defender, I am proud to contribute to the results on club and high school. I was named All Conference and All Sectional this year and on the All State Watch list each year.
- Previously, I played with the LaGrange Celtics since U8. Two years in a row, we qualified for the National Premier League (NPL) finals in Denver, Colorado. I was selected to the All National premier league team in 2021. In Fall 2021, we won our MCL league and were elevated to Premier I. I chose to move to Chicago Inter for the higher level of competition and exposure.
I have always loved the game of soccer from a very young age. I started playing when I was 6 and with each year, my passion for (and knowledge of) soccer only grows. My older sister was one of my biggest influencers when it came to soccer. I would go to all of her games and watch in amazement as she played. I knew I wanted to be just like her. I also watch as much professional soccer as I can, especially the women’s national team, in order to learn more and see the field from various perspectives. I watch game film from my high school and club games to see what I can do better and how my opponents play, too.
Throughout the years soccer has helped me in so many ways, not only athletically but in my life off the field as well. Whenever I am not feeling like myself or feeling down, playing soccer always makes me forget about whatever I am stressing out about. I have learned so much about myself because of soccer; I know that I need to push myself to work harder and to persevere and that I can’t ever give up. I have also learned that nobody else is going to make me work hard, I have to do that for myself and always push through any obstacles. When I overcome challenges, it’s so rewarding. I am proud to say I was selected to be a Student Athlete Leader at my high school. This was a two-round interview process and I am the only 2024 girls soccer player, representing the soccer program.
I am extremely hard-working and disciplined. I am determined and dedicated—not just in soccer but, again, in my school life and as a person, team mate and friend. I am a team leader on and off the field, encouraging my teammates in any way I can. I love to be a motivator to others around me at all times. Helping others in all aspects is one of the most important things in my life. My future career will have to involve helping others.
Academically, I have very high goals for myself. I strive to be the best version of myself and constantly put forth my best effort. I am committed to working hard in all of my classes to the best of my ability—and to not run from challenges, but to welcome them and overcome them. College-wise, my goal is to attend a school with a very high academic program and soccer program and to make a difference in what I do on and off the field.
