Standing behind the blocks at the PIAA State Championship meet my freshman year all that kept going through my mind was that I was too young, too slow, and too inexperienced. A rush of anxiety came over me in a manner that had never occurred before. I was always nervous about races but not like this. I could not get into the water with the blow of the whistle. This is when everything in my swimming career changed. I did swim that race and surprisingly made it to finals. Two months later however it was a different story. I could not get on the blocks to swim at a USA meet held at the same pool where I first experienced performance anxiety. This is when I knew I needed to change something since swim was still my passion. I changed my training and joined a YMCA team, working harder that I had in the past with a new charge. I was fortunate to swim again at PIAA State Championships without an issue and swam at YMCA National Championships with a new attitude and a smile on my face!
I would like to attend a school that will challenge me both academically and athletically. I feel these challenges are the type that lead to success, which is my ultimate goal. Swim has forced me to develop time management skills balancing school work and pool and gym training. I believe that I am qualified to attend schools that I expect these qualities in their successful students. I am an adaptable student athlete who can overcome adversity and become stronger from challenges I am sure to face on my journey to success.
