Personal Statement

HI! I am Keelin Engel, a 5'8" pole vaulter from Worth County R3 High School in Grant City, MO with a weighted GPA of 4.0. Originally trained in classical ballet, I switched to pole vaulting in 8th grade (2017) after watching my brother pole vault, gaining a great interest in the sport.

As a freshman(2018), I consistently vaulted 8' but was not satisfied with my performance. I wanted more. The summer of my sophomore year, I made up my mind I would succeed and grow into a strong vaulter. I started lifting weights and made the 4 hour round trip each week to train with Todd and Hannah Cooper, at "Just Vault", where I started to see the bar raise at indoor meets that winter. As the high school, outdoor season(2019) started, I opened with a 9.0' vault and ended with a PR of 10.0'.

In 2020, as we all closed down to stay safe, I continued to stay positive and trained on my technique, speed, and strength at home. In May, our state allowed us to begin practices as we followed social distancing protocol. Through the summer, I was thankful to attend several pole vault meets/invitationals and ended summer with several 11' vaults with the crossbar during practice.

I am a student who tries to succeed in everything I do academically, athletically, and through activities, while trying to be a positive leader to my peers and in my community. I am looking for a university where I can find the right balance between the classroom and in pole vaulting, being strong and successful in both. I would like to pursue a career in Agricultural Education and feel that my best fit could be at any level of study and competition. I am going to continue to strive academically an raise that bar to new heights in the coming years!

  • The summer of my sophomore year I began to make the 4 hour round trip to Todd Cooper's vaulting facility, "Just Vault". Coach Cooper was an All American at Baylor University, as well as having vaulted in 2 Olympic Trials. My freshman year I was an 8' vaulter and by the end of my sophomore year, a 10' vaulter. Unable to compete my junior year due to the COVid-19 virus, I have recorded an 11' vault successfully(though not officially)in vault practice.
