"I grew up on the track and in the long jump pit and I find solace there. No matter how my day has been, whether I've had triumphs or even troubles, once I'm on that track everything comes into focus. Troubles or worries, the stress of the day all fade behind me as I run and jump; all the while striving to better myself and my times.
I am competitive by nature and definitely come by it honestly with both my parents and older brothers having been athletes as well. I crave the competition, not just with others, but within myself. Fast isn't fast enough; I jump 17 feet, let's get to 18, then 19 and 20... The anticipation of the race is like a call to my soul to live and be alive.
I guess I take my name, Hermes, to heart; I have wings on my feet and I want to fly!" -from an interview printed in the Edmond Santa Fe Year Book
Ultimately I want to attend a university that will allow me to not just continue my athletics, but to strive to reach my ultimate goal of being a doctor. While I haven't made my final decision, I will either specialize as a trauma surgeon or sports medicine doctor. No matter which path I take in medicine, I will be serving my country in the United States Navy; helping those who serve and protect our freedom.
My parents have taught me that hard work will reap great reward; and sometimes its not something you can hold in your hand. It took me years to understand; and I find with each new experience it can mean something different. My faith has taught me to treat all people with respect and dignity and to love unconditionally. My dad taught me to be a leader and to have integrity; that sometimes even the most unpopular decision is still the right one (especially when no one is looking). My mom taught me to be persistent; that giving up is never an option. These life lessons have not just become part of my character, but part of who I am at my core. These 'core' values are exactly why I would be an asset to any university and their athletic department.
