Personal Statement
My family and I have always set high academic goals for me, and I have so far been lucky enough (with hard work) to do very well in school. One of my goals is to play volleyball in college at as high a competitive level as possible while also performing at a very high academic level. I believe I am a good candidate for recruitment because I have always been willing to push myself with a focus on technique, conditioning and successful performance and have so far been able to continue improving. My coaches have also said I am very coachable, and I believe I am able to take coaching suggestions and implement them into my performance. Although I am maturing and realize balance is important, I am never content with just being "good." I strive to be a leader, and I want to be great. I have been told that that is apparent in my work ethic. What makes me different from other recruits is that not only am I able to have fun when the time is right, but also when it's time for the hard work, I put everything I have into performing well and improving. Additionally, throughout my life, every sport I have played hasn't just been a sport, it has been a passion, especially now with volleyball. I am so excited because I feel I have found “my sport,” and it has become as big a part of my life as family and academics. I plan for that to be the case for as long as possible. However, to be clear I do understand the importance of academics, and not losing focus on academics even when playing sports at a high level. I work just as hard academically as I do on the volleyball court, which makes me a versatile recruit. My dad was a national team rower, and rowed crew in the varsity 8-man boat at Cal Berkeley and my mom was also an accomplished athlete. They both have instilled in me the need for balance. As such, I believe I am a solid recruitment candidate for any school that demands high performance at athletics without losing focus on the academics.
