Personal Statement
I hear a lot of people talk about how volleyball is their passion, but volleyball is so much more than that to me - it's a lifestyle. Being a student athlete impacts you on and off the court. For me, volleyball and education are not separate. As a student-athlete, I strive to excel in the classroom and on the volleyball court equally. Volleyball pushes me physically and mentally, teaches me to accept criticism, has made me the leader I am today. Education too pushes me physically and mentally, not necessarily in my athletic ability, but requires that I am in shape so I can stay on top of my studies and ready to learn.
At the age of 11, I went to a local clinic and one of the coaches suggested trying out for their club and before I knew it I was at practice learning the correct approach. As time went on I picked up the responsibilities of a middle blocker and team captain.
Without my family I wouldn’t be where I am today. Growing up with three sporty and athletic brothers, I learned early on to be competitive. Being the only girl, I was NOT going to be left out or out done by them. My mom instilled in me the importance of an education and doing whatever it takes to reach my goals. Our extended family and friends, through school, volleyball and church support my efforts and are always available to encourage and support whatever I need to move forward in life. I am truly blessed.
As I am entering my freshman year, my goals for high school include playing 4 years of volleyball for my high school, earning the Florida Seal Of Biliteracy in American Sign Language (I have already completed my 2 years of high school Spanish) and being a member of the National Honor Society.
Volleyball has helped me develop and discover my leadership abilities. I have always been told I was a leader, but I didn’t recognize it for myself until I started playing on a team. I’ve been told that it’s unusual for a Middle Blocker to be a Captain, however for 3 seasons I have been called upon by 3 different coaches to lead my team. I have enjoyed every second of it! The past year I have gone back and volunteered, reffed, and even coached some. At the place where it all started for me.
