Hi my name is Myla Shippy and I am an eighth grader from Savannah, Georgia. I am a multi-sport athlete where I play Varsity for my school in volleyball, basketball and tennis. In 7th grade I started playing varsity basketball and tennis and was on the 8th grade volleyball team. Last year I tried out for club volleyball and was invited to play on the 14’s National Mizuno team and this year I am on the 15’s National Mizuno Team as an 8th grader. It is pretty evident that I am ahead of most people my age and have the potential to play a college sport.
During my first year of club, I was willing to work really hard. My first few tournaments I was barely approaching and not getting many swings, towards the end of the season I was approaching fast and getting many kills and even slides and solo blocks. This showed I was improving fast and I was very coachable. I practiced with older players most of the time and they really encouraged me to keep working harder because I wanted to be as good or better than them. I played middle position in club volleyball and served in one rotation, however, in Varsity High School season I was playing all around as a middle where I was able to improve my passing and court coverage. I started jumping higher and getting quicker as a middle. As a back row player I tried my best to get every ball and was always on the floor. My serve is also getting stronger. I love being on a team with older players because they really teach me how to be a leader and push myself.
After high school volleyball season, I was invited to a strength and conditioning program designed for prospective college Division I athletes. I'm currently doing that every Monday and Thursday morning before school, and I'm getting stronger every week. It is definitely a huge commitment which shows I am willing to be the best I can possibly be. At the same time I am playing Varsity basketball and Club season has started as well.
I have always worked very hard in everything I do, including school. I am always finding time to study and keeping up with my work even if I have games or a tournament. I have a 4.0 GPA. I am looking for a good college program that will grow me as an all around player and also challenge and encourage my academics. I want to play at the highest level of volleyball that I can.
