How Volleyball Will Help Me Change the World
Thank you for taking time to read my personal statement. I’m a left-handed setter at Adidas Dynasty and I play on 16-1 (Black). I have competed at USA Volleyball Nationals and was voted onto the All-Tournament team at the President's Day Classic in St Louis last year. I’m a vocal and competitive leader on my team. I strive to make those around me better through my leadership on and off the court. When I’m on the court, I increase my teams level of energy and enthusiasm. I believe the setter’s role is to deliver quality sets, provide exceptional leadership and drive the team's energy. I enjoy the culture at Dynasty because they challenge me to constantly develop these skills, which will ultimately help me change the world.
Volleyball will help me change the world because it is and will continue to be an integral part of my well-rounded education and personal development. My goal in college is to obtain a law degree so I can be an advocate for people with disabilities. I am very fortunate to have an inspirational mentor, Sarah Castle, who is a prosecutor for Jackson County in Kansas City, the president of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association and a four-time U.S. Paralympian. Sara has been a significant influence in my life. Not only has she helped me to gain a better understanding of the law, but we worked together to form Y4KC (Youth For Kansas City), a youth-based charity organization that raised over $60,000 for the NWBA and Midwest Adaptive Sports. We collaborated with the NWBA to recognize the gold medal wins of the USA Men’s and Women’s wheelchair basketball teams at the 2016 Rio Paralympics and worked with numerous local businesses to hold a charity gala. Along with my work at Y4KC I have volunteered with Special Olympics.
Hopefully I’m the type of student athlete you’re looking for. I look forward to discussing this with you in the future.
Respectfully,
Emma Vance
