My name is Caroline Miller, and I’ve been playing volleyball since the fifth grade, and I started playing club in eighth grade. I live in Bloomfield, NJ and I’m going into my sophomore year at Paramus Catholic High School (PCHS). I’m a 5’4” libero for PCHS. I made the varsity team as a freshman and made first team all-league. For my club team (Sideout Sports), I’m a six rotation outside hitter.
I’ve always loved being part of a team, and sports have taught me a lot throughout the years. Some of the things I’ve learned through volleyball and other sports is to be able to look at myself and honestly say what I do well and where I need improvement. For example, I believe that my passing and serving are my strengths. But a weakness is that I am hard on myself when I make a mistake. I need to be better about shaking off bad plays, not be too hard on myself, and regain my focus. That is my goal for improving now. Another thing I have learned in sports is that good teammates must be selfless. For example, I love playing libero, and I think that is where I’m best and can excel in the future. I play libero for my high school team, but my club team needs me to play outside hitter, so I have to do what’s best for the team.
Overall I’m a pretty good athlete. Besides volleyball, I’ve played basketball and track and field for six years in my elementary and middle school. In track I ran the 1600 meters and set the school record for girls’ turbo javelin at my middle school. But I realized that volleyball was the sport that I loved most and want to continue to work at.
As soon as I started playing club volleyball, I knew that I had a passion for the sport and wanted to continue to grow as a player for as long as possible. Playing volleyball at the college level will enable me to continue to improve in physical skills, mental knowledge of the game, and teamwork. Playing in college will really help me to learn the strategy and technical parts of the game which I hope to learn because I may want to coach some day.
