My name is Sophia Sokolich and I currently attend Saint Francis Preparatory High School in Queens, New York. I was born and raised in Whitestone, New York and have spent the entirety of my life there. Having been afforded the privilege to attend Saint Francis Prep, I have also been blessed to have opportunities and access to a cutting-edge education, top-end extracurriculars as well as competitive athletics.
Although my interests have changed throughout the years, one main constant has been my passion for volleyball which I have played since childhood. I currently play setter/right side for both my high school and travel teams. My interest in the sport came about when I was a young girl while attending my older sister’s CYO, travel, Saint Francis Prep High School and Adelphi University games. I would watch the matches and was amazed by how these girls not only played themselves but played as a team. I watched how they depended on each other, I watched as they worked together for each point. It was a thrill for me to see them work so hard, and congratulate each other once the point was earned. This passion really took off while I was in 3rd grade at my elementary school CYO team, but over the years my interest grew - and so did my skills. I later joined a travel volleyball team in 5th grade and have been developing ever since.
My love for this sport is something that shines through in my everyday life. To me it is much more than being on the court, it is also about the team being one and accomplishing a set goal collectively. Being exposed to the sport at a very young age, I simply fell in love the same way my sister had done previously. I take great pride in the fact I am able to follow in her footsteps. Volleyball is easily the best / most favorite part of my life and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Even though it can be difficult to manage a love for a sport with academic studies at the same time, I strive to be the best student-athlete I can be. Every day, I put my best foot forward in meeting and exceeding my athletic and academic goals. It is with this internal drive that I have been able to maintain a straight-A average as well as playing at a high level on the court - so much so that I have been chosen as Team Captain year after year. Knowing that my coaches and teammates count on me to lead them while depending on me in this position is an extremely humbling role which I feel honored to be in.
I am now searching for a continuing blend of high-level volleyball as well as academic excellence. I look forward to what my future endeavors hold and working harder than ever towards achieving success.
