Personal Statement
My college aspirations are completely academic. I would like to major in the diagnostic side of biomedical sciences. What draws me to biomedical sciences is that I want to help people and I want to contribute to furthering our understanding of medicine. I want to figure something out. I want to make a discovery. In the field I’m not sure what I want to specialize in but as my path continues to change I find myself more and more interested in this field. I approach my career like volleyball, I am in pursuit. In pursuit of the next swing, next discovery, and next cure.
When I was in eighth grade my club season was canceled for covid. Although I only had a few years of experience, I set my sights on reaching the highest level I could play at. I approached my coach, who is also my mom, and told her that I wanted to play at the highest level which at the time was varsity. I knew because she was my mom that I would have to prove it twice. So I put my head down and got to work, fighting for every ounce of the game I could take in and also studying players who I could learn from. Even though I have transitioned to outside my opening to play at the highest level was in the middle. My experiences in the middle taught me about coachability because everything about the position was new to me while still taking away skills such as speed of approach, court awareness, and reading a setter.
Achievement drives me both in the classroom and in the gym. I love being good at stuff. I see achievement as something that comes along with growth. As I grow as a player and a student there will be small victories like acing a test or winning a tournament. Focusing on achievement has taught me to be realistic and practical about individual successes and failures and how they lead to growth. Winning athlete of the year in eighth grade, freshman student of the year, and all-conference 2nd team as a sophomore are achievements that have made me realize what all of the work I have done is for, growth. When I win an award or receive a mention I use that as fuel to keep working for the next achievement.
I am a highly motivated student-athlete with a limitless work ethic and vision. On the court, my competitive spirit comes out and I will do anything to win. My favorite thing about volleyball is winning. To me, winning isn’t always more points on the scoreboard, even though it is nice, winning is playing to the best of your ability and pushing the people around you to play to their best. Another aspect of winning to me is getting the most I can out of the game. I recognize all aspects surrounding the game from strength coaches to volleyball coaches and players as resources. The key to getting the most out of the game is being open to feedback and willing to apply that feedback even when it looks ugly in the beginning. It is also trusting, what those coaches and athletes say and do, and that it is for the right reasons.
