Personal Statement
I am 6’ tall and I float around 140 pounds. I have had a starting position on my varsity team for my high school in Groton, NY every year since my freshman year. My sophomore and junior year I was a captain of my team. Freshman year I qualified for the Section IV DII tournament, which is the qualifier to go to the state tournament, at 120 pounds though i did not place. My sophomore year I placed third in the qualifier tournament to go to states at 120 pounds, my only loss being in overtime in the semifinals. My Junior year I also took third in the sectional tournament losing to the same opponent in the semifinals again, but this time in triple-overtime (ultimate ride out) in the 126 pound weight class. As a result, I was named an alternate for the state tournament.
For the past 2 years I have been wrestling for a local travel team known as Finger Lakes Wrestling Club. We travel all over the country and are very competitive club having multiple state champions on our team. Many of the wrestlers that wrestled for Finger Lakes went on to wrestle in college. We train with a lot of the college wrestlers from Cornell University as well. I have also started competing in freestyle and Greco as a member of the club, which has greatly improved my ability as a wrestler.
The past 4 summers I have attended wrestling camps. I went to the Cornell University 5 day intensive camp twice and the J Robinson 28 day intensive camp in Minnesota twice also. Both camps helped me develop as a wrestler and improve mental toughness as well as expose me to wrestling at the highest level. This off season I plan on continuing to work out with my club team and compete as much as possible in folkstyle, freestyle, and greco open tournaments.
My greatest trait as a wrestler and as an addition to your team is that I still have a lot of room to grow and that I learn very quickly. I am never afraid to be pushed and will always strive to become better.
It has been my dream to be a wrestler in college ever since I was very young. Before it seemed like a dream that I would never be able to accomplish. That being said, I now believe that it is what I am meant to do and that I will achieve that dream.
I am looking for a college that has a competitive level of education that would help me eventually enter the field of law. I am open to all divisions of wrestling and would be understanding of not having an immediate spot, but I will work to prove that I deserve to be in the starting line-up. I’d prefer to stay east of the Mississippi River, but I am more than willing to travel if necessary. The size of the school does not concern me.
As a part of the team I will always strive to set and surpass goals for myself and my teammates. My favorite thing about wrestling is growing within the sport with the people you train with. Though wrestling is largely an independent sport, I still consider it very much a team effort. I believe that the respect for one another within the wrestling community is stronger than that of any other sport. That is why I want to extend my wrestling experience past high school and into my college life.
