Personal Statement

My name is Sam McClellan and I just finished my 8th grade year at Long Valley Middle School. Basketball is my favorite sport although I still play some baseball during the spring and summer. I have currently grown to a shade over 6'3" and weigh about 160 pounds, although I think I lost a good chunk of that at 5 Star Camp last week! I started playing basketball for my church's CYO team when I was in 4th grade and played through my 8th grade season. I also played on my town travel team from 5th-8th grade, and my middle school team in 7th and 8th grade. I was one of only 2 7th graders to make the middle school team for the 2008-09 season. I was a co-captain and leading scorer on my middle school team this year, and other than AAU have been fortunate to start every game I have ever played. For my age I have played alot of basketball and have developed a pretty good court sense and grasp of the fundamentals; especially boxing out, using the pick and roll, and showing on help defense when my man picks. The experience of playing on AAU teams taught me about how to operate when not being a focal point of the offense and how to work to get open shots for others. Because of the size on my AAU team I was given the opportunity to handle the ball more and to further develop my perimeter shooting. I had a cold stretch toward the end of the season, but was about a 50% 3 point shooter for much of the year. This experience was great because at my height it is not likely something I will get to do for my High School team. The highlight of my season was being selected as one of the top 10 8th graders at a Prep All-Star one day clinic at Stevens Institute in Hoboken.

Two areas that I will be working on are building my strength and agility. That will begin next month as my parents so I am now old enough to begin weight training. I have had a goal of playing college basketball since I first started watching it years ago. Playing in AAU tournaments has given me a good feel for the level of competition out there and I think I have what it takes, but I know it will take alot of hard work. Because I have not started high school yet I do not really know what I want to study or what type of college I want to go to, but I really want to play basketball at a competitive level as long as my skills and effort will allow me to. My parents have strongly emphasized the importance of academics and I finished a pretty strong 8th grade schedule with all A's and B's. Obtaining the same results in High School will be challenging, but I know I can do it.
