Personal Statement
Hello, my name is Gianni Martinez, and I am from Broomfield, Colorado where I am currently going into my junior year as a student athlete at Broomfield High School. My passion ever since I was a little boy was to play soccer. I have worked hard to accomplish my goals and now play on the back line of my team. One of my many qualities includes being a leader for my peers and teammates. I am a player that is always aware of what is happening on the field and keeps in constant communication with other players. Because of this, I prefer to play in a center back position. I am an intelligent player who works hard and stays calm under pressure whether I am in possession of the ball or not. I am a reflective player where I learn from my mistakes and use them to motivate and challenge me to be the best player I can be, on and off the field. I work hard for my team by pushing myself and giving the best effort to be in possession of the ball. I truly am a team player that works hard to communicate and lead my team to success.
During my sophomore year of high school, one of my goals was to make the varsity soccer team. Unfortunately, I had only made the junior varsity team. However, this motivated me to get better and work on my skills to make me a better soccer player. Because of this, I worked incredibly hard to learn how to be a leader and better defender. Towards the end of the Junior Varsity season, the Varsity coach asked me and only two other players to help support our Varsity team in their victory of the playoffs. I was so grateful for the opportunity to play in a few games that helped lead my team into the finals, ultimately winning the state championship for our school. Being a coachable player and someone who is willing to apply constructive feedback, I was able to develop my skills and learn more about the game of soccer.
Ever since I began high school, I have grown to be a leader. This year, I had the opportunity to be a part of my school’s leadership program where I was able to volunteer to be a Blue Crew leader. With this program, I was given the role of guiding incoming freshman on their transition into High School. I also took park in participating as a volunteer at the Bolder Boulder six-mile race to help support the hardworking runners. Given these opportunities, I have learned leadership skills as a student and a soccer player as well.
Not only do I work hard at being the best leader I can be for my teammates, classmates and peers, but I also work incredibly hard at achieving my academic goals as well. I am a lifelong learner on and off the field and work hard to further my knowledge at being an engaged and active student. As I continue on through high school, I will continue to work hard at achieving my ambitions and won’t stop until I have achieved academic and athletic success. Most importantly, I am eager to have a great education at a university that is willing to help guide and support me. Any university that is willing to offer that, is the college for me.
