Personal Statement
My name is Corrina Spalding. I am in the class of 2017 and I live in San Jose, California. Though I am a 5'5" Defender, I am still growing and I pride myself on my physical strength on the field. I started lifting when I was a Freshman, and now represent women in the free-weight section of my gym. This was inspired by my Bear Lax club’s off-season workouts. I have played literally every position on the field, but four years ago started to focus on defense. On defense I am praised for my communication, and I am told that I have a very loud and intimidating voice. I am the first one helping first and second slides. My team looks up to me as being a great team defender. Ever since I was a Freshman I have been a core defensive player on my high school’s varsity team. As far as academics go, I have a 4.3 GPA and have recently received an award for being the top student in my class for Social Studies. I also received the Student Athlete Award for having the highest GPA on my team. I have a passion for the sciences and hope to major in them in college. I attend a rigorous college preparatory high school called Archbishop Mitty. Some notable alumni include Olympians Brandi Chastain and Kerri Walsh-Jennings, in addition to current student Olympian Polina Edmunds. I will likely not make an Olympic team, but I do wish to highly influence the world through the advocation of human rights and scientific research. My dream is to work in a lab that creates effective medicines at a low cost for under-privileged communities world-wide. In a college, I am looking for a rather small body where I can form close bonds with a majority of the students and professors and not be stuck in a big auditorium classroom where the TA grades the papers. I want there to be quality research opportunities available in the field of science so I can deepen my passion and knowledge for science. Yes, I do love lacrosse in a college, as my second home is on the lacrosse field, but I want a school to be primarily academic-oriented.
