I was fortunate enough to grow up in a small town with lots of friends and supportive family around me. When I was 9 years I started playing football with my friends and with my family watching. I tried out for the quarterback position. There were some other boys who also tried out, but it seems I got the position because I was taller than the rest. It felt natural to be in that position.
When I am in control I feel calm and perfectly content. I have trust in my receivers and my offensive line to do their part and they can trust that I will do my part for the good of the team. Most of the guys on the team have been my friends and teammates since we were little, some of us since kindergarten. We believe in each other, we know each others strengths and weaknesses and have built a great team chemistry. As the leader, I also accept new players onto the team with encouragement and respect.
I also have trust in my coaches and they have trust in me. My coaches give me the power to be able to read the defense and make the right choices and play calls. We communicate throughout the game so that I feel comfortable with the calls. The mental game of football is one I do well in, it has helped my study habits, on and off the field. I can prioritize and make good decisions because I have done my homework.
The football field is meaningful to me because it is a place where I am a trusted leader and I know that I have done everything that I can do to make the best calls and plays possible. Once the ball is snapped, I tune out the crowd, sidelines and coaches, and can focus on the ball and my teammates as we run the play. It is a great feeling of contentment and one where I am in my element.
