As a student athlete in Hawaii, everyone has their own story. Mine starts with being the youngest in my family and having to work twice as hard as everyone else in my family. Growing up I was a baseball boy from games every weekend and practice daily. When I reached eighth grade I realized everywhere I went for baseball I was always just known as the little brother. I always wanted to make a name for myself rather than living in the shadow of my brother. I didn't want to live my life from hand me downs, so I chose a different path in life which so happens to be football, knowing that it would be lead by me and only me. Knowing nothing about the grind of the sport as I only watched from the sidelines and from the couch, the intensity that was needed to thrive in football I needed. Football put me in situations that was out of my comfort zone. This taught me that I have to work harder than others and make it my comfort zone knowing my lack of experience. Choosing this as my first step towards a future of mine made me grind more in everything I do even when there's nothing left to grind.
Academic wise, because of football my grades had to be up to par in order to see the field and play the only game I know from now on. When coach started to see me thrive on and off the field it gave him trust in me to get things done. Being trusted by my coach was everything to me so I wanted to always hold myself to higher standards because the grind starts in the classroom. Without grades I would not have a future, because college is a necessity in order to pursue success in life.
