The first time I played, I was a left offensive guard. I remember a game where it was the second quarter 1:53 left on the clock, there was a defensive tackle on the other side ready to make his move. The play lasted more than three seconds. The tackle bull rushed me as his helmet hit my knee.
I looked at my mom with a scared and confused look on my face and before I said anything, she said Russell go back out there they need you. I saw coach looking back at me, I nodded my head and got back out there and continued to play.
It’s the defining moments of the game. The passion, the respect and the lessons of the game, the heart of the game. Football taught me that I can face whatever I’m going through in life as long as you keep moving forward. Not only is football my favorite sport, it is my life, my future, and has been an important teacher through the lessons in life.
Football has taught me to have passion, heart, patience, respect and honor. It is because of my family that gives me the strength, God that gives me guidance, and football that gives me courage. I have become the young man I am today.
I am a young man that hopes to play at the next level, and I feel that I have a lot to offer, not just athletically but also academically to a college. I have goals to hopefully take my play to the ultimate level and most importantly to make my family proud when I walk across the stage as I earn my degree.
I am a young man who strives to be the best that I can be and always mindful to leave a positive impact to the people around me. I want to leave a legacy of integrity, respect, and honor. My name is Russell Roberson, my name means something to me, I take pride in who I am and what I do, and that’s why I play football to inspire others to be the best they can be.
