My name is Jack McCallister and I am the varsity kicker and punter for King’s High School in Shoreline, Washington. I have always dreamed of playing sports in college. Since the age of 9, I have played soccer at a high level and originally thought I would play in college and, hopefully, beyond. I continued to play other sports (baseball, basketball, swimming) growing up and wanted to kick for the football team with my friends once I started junior high. I went out for the team as a 7th grader and after no one mentioned kicking the first five days, I asked the coach and he said, “we don’t really worry about that right now.” My interest was in kicking and I was disappointed to not be able to do so in 7th grade.
After watching me play as a freshman striker on the varsity soccer team, my high school football coach asked if I was interested in playing football. I said I was interested in kicking and I showed up and started kicking the football as a sophomore. I loved it. A couple of months into the season I went to my first Chris Sailer kicking camp and had a great time. I remember watching my kicking film before lunch and getting some feedback. I came back after lunch and corrected all that I needed to do in order to improve.
Excited at having found an avenue to learn and get better, I began attending national kicking camps and competed against the best kickers in the nation. I enjoy the technical aspect of kicking, continually seeking knowledge and input to refine my technique. I am proud of my nation rankings and look forward to continuing my climb higher.
I still play soccer but in kicking I have found a combination of culture (I love the football atmosphere, competition and camaraderie with my teammates) and athletic satisfaction that is unmatched in my mind. As I start my last year of high school football, I look forward to continue learning and developing. I know that as long as I put in the effort and keep seeking knowledge, I will realize my dream of playing football in college and beyond.
