Personal Statement

My goals in college are to find myself as a person. I plan to earn a Communications degree because I believe I'm good with interacting with people and people also like my personality. Hopefully, one day I will be on a talk show about sports which is the big goal.

When it comes to basketball I feel like I can fit on any team. I bring energy,  I pay attention,  I listen,  I work hard and I'm willing to help my teammates with anything they need.

I feel like what makes me different character wise is that I'm not cocky and I respect my coach and if he asks me to do anything I'll do it.  From an athletic standpoint what sets me apart is my quickness and my midrange jumpshot. I'm also extremely efficient scoring on the wings and I can post up. From an academic standpoint I believe what separates me from others is that I'm a very good writer- I can capture the readers attention and make any topic interesting.

  • ActivitiesAcademic Experience & Extra-Curricular Activities Laney College, 900 Fallon Street, Oakland California January-July 2015 I studied Haitian Dance and Drum with Professor Colette Eloi, and drummed at several shows and the final class performance with her company, El Wah Movement. I also registered for the Study Abroad Haiti Dance and Drum Seminar at Laney College and spent the summer immersing myself in the music and cultural traditions of Haiti, culminating in a three-week journey throughout the country. During my time there, I studied at ENARTS, the National School of the Arts, and volunteered with the Bellot Idovia Foundation in the village of La Toti, working with my classmates to teach children drum and dance. Malonga Casquelord Center for the Arts, 1428 Alice Street, Oakland California September 201- December 2014 I studied Advanced Drum with Tacuma King, founder of Bay Area Youth Arts, a nonprofit organization that teaches drum and dance to urban youth. Along with a select group of students, I performed at venues throughout the Bay Area, including cultural events, fundraisers and festivals. I also assisted Mr. King with younger students during the Beginner Drum class. Medgar Evers College Young Adult Summer Academy, 1600 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, N.Y Summer 2012-Summer 2014 I participated in a summer academic program for youth that was taught by professors from local city universities. Our studies revolved around STEM; we studied robotics and genetics as well as film and production. At the end of the year ceremony, we showcased our films and received academic awards. Ifetayo Cultural Arts Academy, 348 St. Marks Ave, Brooklyn, New York 2007-2013 I was a weekly participant in the Cultural Arts and Rites of Passage Programs. I studied with master drummers from Africa, the Caribbean and the United States. As a member in the Rites of Passage Collective, I learned about the history of the African Diaspora and my role as a young man in my family and community. We also went on field trips to museums and cultural events, attended academic and financial seminars, and worked consistently on improving our physical and emotional health.
