Personal Statement

I left the gymnasium crushed the day that I found out I didn’t make the junior varsity basketball team after trying out in the 7th grade. I wanted to play ball bad. I had played football in the past, but I decided to try out basketball because my older brother played. He had taught me a few things before he had to go away for some time after getting in trouble with the law. My sister didn’t play and neither did my mom. It was tough going through the process of trying out alone and being rejected really did hurt me. I kept trying though. I practiced at the neighborhood recenter, I did drills in my backyard, and I gained enough skill to make the team when I tried out again in the 8th grade. Unfortunately, my grades kept me from playing. So, when I entered high school, I was hungry to be on the court. I was no longer playing ball because that is what my brother did. I wanted to play for me. I wanted to play because I had grown to love the sport.

I made my high school basketball team both in the 9th and 10th grade. I also started playing in my local recenter league and on AAU teams. I saw myself grow as a leader on and off the court. The skills I learned on the court like communication and patience helped me be a better leader at my church. I really became a team player; my life was no longer about just me and my skills. I grew to understand that I have to encourage those around me- my teammates when they are on the court and I am on the sideline, my family when they achieve things, my boys in my small group when we do things during church. I have really developed a profound passion and respect for the game. Most notably, I can see the holes in teams defenses,  I can objectively understand what my teams need to work on offensively quickly, I am an excellent rebounder, I play a great mid range game, I have high energy on the bench, I take initiative,  I am hard working, and I am eager to learn more.  Like most athletes I want to continue to play basketball after high school. Thinking long term, I want to use all the statistical and historical facts I know about basketball players, all my hands on experience of actually playing basketball, and all the experience I have at coaching other basketball players (at AAU tournaments) to be a sports broadcaster and have my own radio show.
