Lukas McCalla '16 Recruiting Profile

The fall of this year I will be a Senior at Washburn Rural HS in Topeka, KS. I am a golfer at heart but to help me get through winter, I also play varsity basketball for my high school. I have been playing golf competitively since I was 11 years old.  This June I enjoyed my biggest victory in a win at the Kansas Jr. Amateur in Wellington, KS.  My last two rounds were under par and I came from behind to win the last day.  I have also finished T11th at an AJGA event in Lawrence, KS and T17th in Iowa City at Finkbine GC in the Midwest Junior Championship.  It has been fun to transition from summer golf tournaments on my own, to being part of one of the best high school teams in my state.  As a freshman, sophomore and junior, I was awarded All-Centennial League, All-City for Boys Golf as well as WRHS Newcomer of the Year my freshman year.  I expect to continue to be a leader this year.  This spring my high school golf team won the Kansas State HS Class 6A tournament in Hutchinson, KS.  I led the team with my 5th place finish.  Being part of a golf team has been a great experience. Golf can be a lonely sport at times and it is so great to have teammates to share this game with. We have pushed each other and made each other work harder in our desire to get better. We want to be the best we can be. I know that if I have guys pushing me, I will benefit from that experience.  I'm excited to play at the collegiate level next year.  I haven't really narrowed down my desired geographic location for school. It would be great to end up somewhere where the weather doesn't prevent you from playing and practicing in the winter though!  I am looking for a bigger school to attend. I like school and take pride in my academic record. My schoolwork is important to me and I have learned how to prioritize my time to get my work done. I have found this to be especially important during golf season where you miss quite a bit of school. My strongest subjects are math and science but I haven't really decided on a career. I hope you can see I am a loyal student of the game of golf and I am a great teammate. I support others in their goals to be their best as I am doing the same for myself. I have awesome support from my family, my high school golf coach and the pro that I work with regularly. I am confident my golf will only get better!
