Since I can remember, I have always wanted to be a goalie and when my Dad tried to persuade me not to be a goalie when I was 7 years old, he remembers me stating, “Dad, you can’t change who I am” and since then, my parents have supported my desire to be a goalie.
I have learned that it takes more than just skill to be an elite hockey player and more importantly, I know I need to be a great teammate on and off the ice, be coachable, respectful, competitive each and every day
One lesson that has helped my excel in my training and development on and off the ice was when I was not selected in my first year of Pee Wee hockey (U13) for the Calgary Crusaders Pee Wee AAA team played in the Hockey Super League. I was selected for the Calgary Crusaders Minor team and over the course of that season, I worked hard on and off the ice that included; weekly goalie sessions, dryland training, vision training and successfully completed a mental training course offered by Goalie Development Inc. The following year, I was selected by the Calgary Crusaders Pee Wee/U13 AAA team and ended the year tied for most wins, posting a record of 12-4, 1 shutout.
I learned over that year that if I set short term goals, work hard, stay committed and push myself outside of my comfort zone, I can achieve my goals.
My short term goal over the next 5 years is to continue to develop on and off the ice; focus on my studies to raise my GPA and being recruited by a High School hockey team, Major Junior team or Sports School in Canada or United States to attend a reputable school to further my education and play hockey at a competitive level.
After 5 year plan, I would like to enroll in a College or University to further my education and hockey career and with an end goal of being drafted in the NHL.
I have always been very flexible which is a definite advantage for a goalie and a few other skills that I possess would be my athleticism, hard work, competitive and most importantly, coachable.
Through my short time in hockey, I have learned to be respectful on and off the ice, importance of being a great teammate, pushing myself out of my comfort zone and developing myself on and off the ice.
