I am born and raised in Dallas, Texas, a third generation Dallasite. I’ve been an oarsman for Jesuit Dallas since freshman year. Crew is a difficult sport especially in Dallas because of its mild winters (lower 30’s) and very humid and hot summers (upper 90’s).
Morning practice in winter temperature is different when you are in a shell about to launch, then going from the car to the school building. It is bitter cold. The other extreme in temperature is late spring through August. Afternoon practice on the lake is muggy and exceptionally warm. Every crew season since freshman year, I have met a personal challenge to build strength, stamina, and discipline all while being exposed to the weather elements of Dallas. The team itself has seen extreme challenges throughout the past few years. COVID and two coaching changes have made me more flexible. My training in various temperatures, team mindset, and my adaptability to change makes me a good candidate for crew.
I can take feedback, maintain composure in stressful situations, and have a strong desire to improve which makes my character different than others. Crew is strenuous and a year-long discipline. My active participation in Jesuit Crew throughout my high school years shows my commitment to athletics. Academics at Jesuit is rigorous. I am a good student with a 3.24 GPA. I have learned the importance of prioritizing and I'm learning to manage school stress by avoiding the tendency to procrastinate. This insight about my challenges and how to make my challenges work for me in my academics make me different than other recruits.
