I started playing soccer for a fut5 team in Costa Rica when my family lived there between 2012 and 2018. From pretty early on I realized that the best way to see the game was from the goal--where the ball was going and where the spaces were. I learned to call for the ball with confidence, "Mio!" When I got to 6th grade and started playing for the middle school team there (6-8th grade), I found out quickly how much harder 8th grade boys kicked and knew I had to get better and tougher. What a gift, then, when I hit 6 feet the spring of 7th grade in time for soccer season and club tryouts in my new California home. Realizing that high school might be another step up, during COVID shutdowns I found a goalkeeper coach to do one on one practices so that I could keep improving, and I ran track workouts with my older sister. When spring of 2021 came and High School soccer tryouts came around and I could play both club and school teams this year, I gave it a shot and made the Varsity team. It was another step up for me.
I love seeing the next level and going for it, putting in the time to get that much better and then realizing the goal. Being tall and fit are great attributes for a goalie but I know that it takes more than that and I am continuing to set new goals for improving my goalie skills. I am looking forward to a full club season this fall. Both my parents were athletes in college and hearing their stories makes me want to have that be part of my college experience. I want to go for that next level of play.
