Hi Coach! My name is Evan Lindeman and someday I hope to be sitting in the chair you are sitting in as a successful soccer coach. Right now though, I want to play soccer for as long as I can. Let me tell you about myself. My goal for college soccer is to play as much as I can as a freshman and grow from there to take on an increasingly important role in leading the team to success.
I’ve been playing soccer since I was 5. When I’m on the field, I’m able to think three plays ahead and read the game so that I can have a greater impact than just playing my position or using my technical skills to make a play. Throughout the years, I’ve played many positions as a utility player on most of the teams I’ve been on. However, in the last two years, I’ve experienced great success as a forward and more specifically in the striker role. In the past two years, I’ve scored the winning goal in the MN State Cup, Club Cup and MN Super Cup to lead the team to victory. I also scored the winning goal at the National Cup Championship in 2022 leading our team to win my club there second ever national championship. This is a demonstration of my focus and ability to work well under pressure to find the net. This year, in high school, I’m spending more time as a right winger and developing my skills in that capacity. I’ve found that I have greater ability to impact the play of the game in that position while still having the ability to move around to follow the play of the game.
My passion for soccer also extends off the field. I’ve been interested in my nutrition, have done weight training, acceleration training and Pura Vida technical foot work training. I have also privately trained with Greg Wheaton, who is the coach for Northwestern University men’s soccer team. Finally, this year, I’m the team captain for my high school soccer team. This has given me an opportunity to step up and work as a leader on the field and off the field with my teammates. This has really enabled me to get a new perspective on how we need to work together, stay positive during times when we lose close games, and to advocate for players during games.
You may look at my experience and question my playing ability since I’m currently playing in the TCSL NPL. However, in Minnesota, there are only a few teams that are ECNL/MLS Next level and those teams are not that successful. I made the choice a few years ago to be on the best team at my age group in MN and that’s the St. Paul Blackhawks. To get greater exposure for our team, we joined the MRL two years ago. Our team is mid-tier in that league mostly due to the challenge of traveling budget, weather conditions, and other strange mishaps. This next year we hope to place higher in the rankings. Currently, our team is ranked 185 of 4114 club teams on gotsoccer.com.
Academically, my grades are strong, but I know I have some growth to do. I’m taking challenging classes this year and am on track to take PSOE in my senior year. I like to play soccer in my free time – so I’ve also played Futsal in the winter as well as Blast. I also like to go watch soccer games with my friends. We have a number of colleges where I live – St. Thomas which has a D1 soccer team and Macalester College which is D3. We also have gone to watch Hamline play (D3) and then of course we watch a lot of high school soccer as well.
As you can see, soccer plays a large role in my life. Hopefully by now you know that when I get on a team in college – I’ll commit and give it everything. I can’t wait to get started.
