A year ago, as a sophomore, we played the number one varsity team in our conference, and I was determined to capitalize on this chance to show my coach that I deserved more playing time. As the referee blew the whistle, I stood like a general, ready to command the defense to shift, guard a player, or move up. The game was intense, with one team scoring and then the other scoring soon after, and it became apparent it would be going into penalty kicks. Many thought we were doomed, but I kept a cool head. I analyzed each player during the game, memorizing what foot they shot with and how their bodies were positioned when striking the ball. The penalty kicks continued until only one more team member left to shoot. Keeper vs keeper: if we win, everyone will be shocked; if we lose, we will keep our heads high. The other keeper shot first, so I stood on the line like a tiger, waiting for the ball to be kicked. I thought that he was going to my left by the way he was setting up to the ball and opening up his hip. The referee blew the whistle, and everything got quiet. I could feel my arms outstretched and the ball's motion stopping. We had done it; we beat the number one team.
From that moment, my confidence as a goalie grew. My coaches would describe me as calm, steady, and determined. My dives are explosive, and my rebound control is excellent. My loud and deep voice can easily be heard to direct the defenders. I'm always ready for any situation by keeping my head high and not getting discouraged, even when losing. I am disciplined, watch what I eat and drink, and am determined to reach the goals that I set for myself. When I notice or am told that I need to improve on a particular skill, I will repeat that skill over and over again until I am better at it. Playing Division III soccer is a dream of mine because it is the perfect balance between athletics and academics. The camaraderie built from being on a team is rewarding, and I love to work hard on the field, but I am also a diligent student willing to ask questions when needed. Initially, I am from Ukraine, and I spoke Russian. I am easy to coach and will accept any criticism given to me. I encourage my teammates and keep my head high. I am very friendly and social. I can quickly bond with other players I do not know and encourage them to give it their all while also giving mine. I am very teachable and can understand anything very well.
