Personal Statement
Soccer has been an important part of my life since I was five years old. I started out playing recreational ball and had the opportunity to be coached by a variety of people, including my father. As I got older, I realized that I wanted to play soccer year-round and began to play on a traveling club team in addition to my school team. From playing soccer, I have learned how to be a leader and to be part of a team, how to push myself to be a better athlete, and how to support my peers. I have also learned how to celebrate successes and how to use failures to improve myself. As a sophomore in high school, I started on the varsity team. My primary position on the field is striker, which I enjoy because I love scoring and can use my strength of speed. I have also enjoyed playing attacking mid and outside mid because I can move the ball around quickly. I would make a good addition to the athletic team because I have a positive attitude, I am committed to doing the work that it takes to improve my skills, and I am dedicated to my team and coach. I feel fortunate to have had Syl Johnson as a coach for the past four years because he has pushed me to do my best and inspires me to always try harder. My parents have also inspired me to pursue my goals. My father is a Master Chief in the US Navy and my mother is a pediatric nurse practitioner. Both have worked very hard to achieve their goals and my mother’s profession sparked my interest in the health science field.
Throughout high school, I have followed the health sciences track and have enjoyed studying Anatomy and Physiology and Diagnostic Medicine. I have worked hard in my studies and currently have a 4.0 grade point average while taking college preparatory classes in addition to dual enrollment classes. I enjoy challenging myself academically as well and hope taking the more difficult classes in high school will prepare me for success in my college career. In college, I plan to study biology as an undergraduate with the desire to go to medical school. Ultimately, I would like to be a radiologist because I want to help people, and I enjoy learning about human anatomy, physiology, and disease processes.
During high school, I have been a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta (Mathematics Honor Society), Spanish Honor Society, and the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) for future health professionals. As a HOSA member, I had the opportunity to compete in the HOSA bowl, where my team was asked health science related questions and competed with other schools. I have also had the opportunity to volunteer with an organization in my community called Visualizing Hope which is a non-profit that provides support for students with visual disabilities. Additionally, I plan to volunteer for Paws and Claws, a local organization that helps stray cats and dogs to find permanent home. Participating in these activities has inspired me to push myself academically, have an active role in my community, and to set my goals high.
A unique characteristic about me is that I have an identical twin brother. Even though we are similar in many ways and both love soccer and both plan to pursue a career in the health sciences, we play different positions and bring our own strengths to the field.
My hope is to find the best college to meet my academic goals while at the same time allowing me to continue to play the sport that I love. I think that playing soccer throughout college will help to keep me grounded in reaching my goals.
