My name is Garrett Clasen, and I am a junior at Batavia High School. I have been club swimming for the West Chicago Sharks since I was 7 years old. When I started, my goal was to have my name on the record boards at my home pool. Since then, I have had many other goals and achievements:
* USA Swimming Scholastic All-American for 2015-16 and 2016-17
* 13 time Illinois LSC state champion in both individual and relay events, both at the age group and senior levels
* 11 time USA Swimming National Age Group Award winner for top 10 national times
* 5 time Illinois state record holder in 15-16 men SCY 200yd IM and 400yd IM and 13-14 year old boys SCY 200 Breast, 200 IM and 400 IM
* USA Swimming SCY all time top 100 list for 15-16 year old men: 400 IM (74th)
* USA Swimming SCY all time top 100 list for 13-14 year old boys: 100 Breast (71st), 200 Breast (35th), 200 IM (36th) and 400 IM (25th)
* Current USA Swimming IMX score of 5,109 for SCY 2016 season in 16 year olds, ranked 11th nationally. 5,176 for the SCY 2015-2016 season in 15 year olds, ranked 6th nationally; my 14 year old IMX score was #1 in the nation at a 5,398

As a Senior at Batavia High School, my achievements in and out of the water are high as well. I have maintained a 4.29 grade point average with Honors and Advanced Placement level classes while swimming. I have concentrated on Engineering as my electives in my first two years of high school, but I will be taking some Business classes in the future as well. On my high school swim team I achieved my goal of qualifying for the Illinois high school state meet in both the 200yd IM and the 100yd Breaststroke for two consecutive years, and I was the first swimmer in over 15 years to score points for my team at state. My high school team also qualified a relay for the first time in 15 years as well. I was awarded Academic All Conference honors, and was my team's MVP my freshman year. I set the Upstate Eight Conference record in the 200yd IM, untapered, and was Sectional champion in the 200m IM. I decided to take my junior and senior years off from the high school team to concentrate on my mid-distance training for national level meets, as Illinois High School season overlaps Junior Nationals and Junior Cup seasons, and the 200yd Breast and 400yd IM events are not offered as events.
I am looking forward to training hard to reach my goal of qualifying for National level meets while maintaining high grades in school. My goal is to swim in college as part of a competitive team with solid academics and qualify for the NCAA championships as a freshman and thereafter.

- I swam 8 for 8 new personal best times at the 2017 Dolfin ISCA Junior Cup in Clearwater, FL. In doing so, I made the championship final in all of my events, and set two new Illinois Swimming state records for 15-16 men: a 1:48.80 in the 200yd IM and a 3:53.51 in the 400yd IM. My 200yd Breaststroke time of 2:01.08 is a US Open cut.

- 5 new best times at the Junior Nationals on only 3 days of rest. Qualified for the B final in the 400yd IM (3:53.85 - 12th place and an NCAA DI B cut), the 200yd IM (1:49.62 - 14th place), and the 200yd Breaststroke (2:02.36 - 14th place). Also swam a 57.21 100yd Breaststroke for 32nd place and time trialed the 200yd freestyle with a 1:41.13. I was happy with my swims overall.

- I was runner-up high point winner, with 4 first place finishes in the 200m IM, 400m IM, 100m Breast and 200m Breast. I also placed 5th in the 200m Fly. Our 400m Medley and 400m Free relays placed 2nd and our 800m Free relay placed 3rd. We had our highest team finish ever in our team's 60 year history, with an overall 5th place. Men placed 2nd in state. I swam near best times after a tough training season where our pool was closed due to construction. Our alternate training facility was an outdoor water park with no backstroke flags and inconsistent weather and pool conditions. I am looking forward to resuming training at our home pool when it reopens at the end of August 2016.

- It was an honor to swim in the Olympic Trials pool at the Omaha Cup. I swam the 200m and 400m individual medley and the 100m and 200m breaststroke, which I made the "A" final in all four. I placed 2nd overall in both the 200m and 400m IM, 5th in the 200m breaststroke and 6th in the 100m breaststroke. I set a new personal best time in prelims of the 100m breast with a 1:06.22, and swam in the same heat as Michael Andrew when he set a new National Age Group record in finals. Though I did not swim any Olympic qualifying times, I learned a lot about my training and taper process, and had a great time swimming at this competition.

- I attained my primary goal of reaching finals in every event I swam. I had personal best times in the 200m IM (2:07.08), 200m Breast (2:24.82), 200m Back (2:15.25), 500yd Free (4:37.88), 400m Free (4:12.73), 100m Fly (58.89), and 200m Breast (1:07.06). I placed top 8 in 4 events (the 200m IM, 100m Breast, 200m Breast and 400m IM). I am continuing my training to achieve my secondary goal of qualifying for the Olympic Trials.

- Qualified for the 200yd Individual Medley finals by swimming a 1:53.12 in prelims, finishing 10th. Swam the 200yd IM in finals with a 1:52.91, placing 8th in Illinois overall. Placed 15th in the 100yd Breaststroke with a 58.12. This year's breaststroke field was extremely tight, with the top 6 qualifiers all swimming a sub-57, and 6-12 all below 58. Our 200yd Medley Relay placed 31st overall, with a 1:38.25, with me leading off in the backstroke with a 25.20.

- Sectional champion in the 200yd Individual Medley with a 1:54.06 and 2nd place finish in 100yd Breaststroke with a 58.78. Qualified for IHSA State in both individual events, and also qualified 200yd Medley Relay with a 1:37.37 (swam backstroke leg in a 25.06).

- I helped my team finish 3rd place in the Upstate Eight Conference, with a 2nd place finish in the 200yd Medley Relay (1:39.87 - I led off with a 25.42 backstroke split) and a 3rd place finish in the 400yd Freestyle Relay (3:19.70 - I anchored with a 47.26). Individually, I was conference champion in the 200yd Individual Medley, breaking the conference record with a 1:54.07, and finished 2nd in the 100yd Breaststroke with a 58.74. Both individual times are below Illinois State qualifying times. I was not suited, tapered or shaven for this meet.

- Overall 9 out of 10 best times swam in 8 SCY and 2 LCM events over the 4 day meet. Placed 13th overall and finished 5th in the "B" final of the 400yd IM with a final time of 3:56.77. Placed 17th overall and finished 1st in the "C" final of the 200yd Breaststroke with a final time of 2:02.73. Other times: 200yd IM (1:52.16), 100yd Breaststroke (57.97), 200yd Butterfly (1:53.64), 200yd Freestyle (1:43.35), 100m Breaststroke (1:07.27) and 200m IM (2:08.78).
