Personal Statement

I started swimming competitively at age ten. Although one of the youngest in my class at St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Austin , Texas I have represented my school with honor at State level competitions (SPC), winning bronze in 100 Yd Back as early as my freshman year. I won several other individual races as well as relay events (200 Free Relay, 1 second away from the SPC record) and I was named on the All-State Private School Swim Team for 100 Yd Back by the Texas Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association. At the end of my freshman year I injured my back and I had to go through a rehabilitation program to regain my strength and flexibility and be able to continue with my training. I had to fight several episodes of sinus and throat infections in my sophomore and junior years. All these challenges I had to overcome made me tougher and more determined to succeed. One of my greatest qualities as an athlete is my belief in strength and conditioning to being instrumental for top performance in water. The more I do outside of pool the more I can do in the pool. I am very motivated to perfecting my line in the water. I believe practice is as much about making increasingly harder intervals as it is about doing things right. I believe that the foremost key to success is efficiency. I am currently focusing on my turns and underwater. I trust that perfecting my line and technique will help me qualify and compete at the Junior National Championships. Swimming is considered an individual sport by many. It is true. Swimmers are extremely competitive on individual level. But some of the happiest, more rewarding memories I have are those I shared with my teammates and relay events. Being part of and contributing to the success of my team, while pushing myself to become the best is what makes me want to continue swimming in college and beyond.

Sincerely, Daniel
