Aloha! Growing up in Hawaii, I found my inspiration in running from my parents. Both my mom and dad ran in high school with my dad moving on to run in college at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Running didn't come easy to me though. My freshman year in high school was a struggle as I did sprints and came last place in many of my races. Even through all of the frustrations and disappointments, I persevered and by my junior year found that my potential belonged in distance running. An example of this comes from my sophomore year to my junior year in cross country. During the 2014 Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) Cross Country Championships, I placed 120th with a time of 19:15.65. Fast forward to the 2015 HHSAA XC Championships, I moved up over 100 places to 19th with a time of 17:10.41. This was the first time earning All-State status in my running career (top 20 finishers). My success carried over to my 2016 track and field season in which I qualified for the HHSAA Finals in the 800m and received a medal as the 6th place finisher.
With the help of my coaches, family and teammates, I plan to continue improving my times during my current senior year. By doing this, I hope my success propels me into a collegiate running career at a school that offers cross country and track. I do believe that a college experience will stretch me as a person because I will have the ability to gain new experiences in this world. I have now found the balance required be both student and athlete and I know this will carry over into a successful college career.
