Personal Statement

My name is Caleb Shimaoka.  I am 16 years old and a senior at Waiakea High School in Hilo, Hawaii.  I am a wrestler and judo player.

I began wrestling in my freshman year of high school.  In my freshman year, I did a lot of learning about the sport.  I learned the basics, learned lots of technique and discovered that I loved the sport of wrestling and knew I wanted to wrestle at the college level.  My freshman year was a growing experience spent learning all I could about the sport as well as training my mind and body to prepare for my sophomore year of high school.

In my sophomore year, I went undefeated in the regular season.  I became the Big Island Interscholastic Federation 120lb Wrestling champion, which allowed me to go to states.  I placed 5th at states in my division that year.  It was my first time at states and it was an amazing experience! At Waiakea High School’s annual awards banquet, I was also named the 2017-2018 Outstanding Male Wrestler of the Year.

Although wrestling is now my passion, I believe my judo experience has helped me excel at wrestling.  I have been doing Judo since I was 5 years old. I have had the opportunity to compete in many tournaments over the years, attend numerous training camps and seminars.  I was also fortunate to spend the last two summers in Japan training at different schools, dojo’s, including Tokai University.

In my freshman year, I placed 2nd in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Judo Championships.  At the State High School Tournament, I placed 6th overall.

In my sophomore year, I was one of the team captains of Waiakea High School's Judo team, went undefeated in the regular season and was the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Champion at the 132lb division.  This year, I was also named the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Male Judoka for 2018 and named athlete of the week for our island in the local newspapers.  At Waiakea High School’s annual awards banquet, I was named the 2017-2018 Outstanding Male Judoka of the year.  I was also promoted to Shodan (Black Belt) the same week I received my award from Waiakea High School.

Because of my accomplishments in wrestling and judo in the 2017–2018 school year, I was also honored to receive Waiakea High School’s 2017-2018 Male Athlete of the Year award.  An award which would not have been possible without the help of my coaches, sensei’s, teammates and family.

In my Junior Year, I went undefeated in the regular season and won the BIIF Wrestling Championship at the 126 lb division.   This year, I also attended the Freak Show Wrestling Tournament in Las Vegas and I placed 6th at the Hawaii State Officials tournament in Oahu.

For judo this past year, i placed 2nd at the the BIIF Judo Championships at the 132lb division and Placed 4th at the HHSAA State Judo Championships.

I love the sport of wrestling and feel that my judo experience gives me an edge on the mat.  I believe my judo skills compliment my wrestling style and helps me counter many wrestling moves.  I’ve learned discipline, confidence and have developed a strong work ethic in my many years of judo, which has only grown since I began wrestling.  I look forward to achieving my goals of wrestling at the collegiate level and am eager to continue growing and learning as a wrestler.
